Bruno Fernandes has opened up on Ruud van Nistelrooy as Manchester United defeated Leicester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s final game as Manchester United‘s interim manager ended in a 3-0 win over Leicester City, thanks to a brilliant display from Bruno Fernandes.

The club captain started proceedings off, finishing well past Mads Hermansen from the edge of the area after a lovely backheel assist from Amad Diallo.

Then, a little before half-time, the midfielder was involved again as his header deflected off Victor Kristiansen’s knee and into the net to hand the home side a two-goal lead.

Alejandro Garnacho then added a third in the final ten minutes with a stunning curling effort, Fernandes involved again through an assist, although Manuel Ugarte and Amad must be given praises for their performances.

Fernandes’ Ruud admission

Speaking to the BBC after the result, Fernandes admitted that his side wanted to give Van Nistelrooy a perfect goodbye through their performance as the Dutchman steps down from his role as interim manager.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy fills the club, he loves the club, he wants to bring joy to the players,” the captain explained.

“He brought everyone with a smile to the games, he just wanted us to enjoy it. We wanted to say goodbye as a manager for him properly because he did good things for us.

“It’s a new era, a new manager means everything changes but what hasn’t changed is that this club has to get back to where it belongs.”

Relief with goals

Fernandes himself was involved in goals across all four of the games managed by Van Nistelrooy, and explained that he is now happy to be back amongst the attacking statistics after a poor start to the season.

“It was a long time that I wasn’t scoring and now goals are coming in the last few games,” he continued.

“Another clean sheet was important for us to bring back the fortress we had here. We have to keep doing that and we have to improve.”

Rúben Amorim will now join United as the club’s new head coach. After the international break, his first match will be an away trip to Ipswich Town on 24 November.
