Bruno Fernandes has dismissed a recent rumour by making a surprise admission about his relationship with Rúben Amorim at Manchester United.

Rúben Amorim’s first few months as Manchester United manager have been more inconsistent than expected, mixing impressive victories against Arsenal and Manchester City with some dismal performances.

Taking charge with the team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, Amorim has yet to lift them higher in the table. United have also been eliminated from both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

However, they remain the only team unbeaten across both the Europa League and Champions League, fueling hopes that winning the former could secure their return to Europe’s elite competition.

With the club facing severe financial struggles, Champions League qualification via Europa League success would provide a crucial financial boost, enabling a much-needed squad overhaul in the summer.

Fernandes dismisses Amorim relationship claim

With Amorim under a lot of pressure to turn the rest of United’s season around, a report from the Manchester Evening News stated that Amorim has been leaning more on his club compatriots, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, than other players.

However, speaking to CBS, Fernandes has dismissed this claim, stating that although the pair have a good relationship, they are not as close as some have stated.

“I wouldn’t say we are ‘quite close’. We don’t speak that much, to be honest,” Fernandes said. “He’s a manager that is very, very quiet. He likes to have a joke while here and there, but he does it with everyone, to be honest.

“Obviously, being the captain, most of the things that he wants to pass to the team many times come to me, but many other times it doesn’t even come from him. It comes from his staff, from the team manager, or whatever.

“Obviously, we have a good relationship, but I wouldn’t say that it’s different than any other player.”

Fernandes opens up on the first time he met Amorim

Further, the United club captain opened up on the first time he met Amorim.

Before United, Fernandes played for Portuguese club Sporting, the same side Amorim joined Old Trafford from, and the 30-year-old explained that he once met Amorim while visiting his former team.

“Obviously, he’s someone that I knew the things he was doing at Sporting, because I was watching Sporting playing in Portugal, but was not someone that I knew personally,” Fernandes continued.

“I’ve met him once, then I went to see a Sporting game, and that was the only time I met him was hello and goodbye. Obviously, I knew the way Sporting was playing. I knew all the fans were excited with him there, I knew that the players were very happy with him at the club.

“I think we all seen the last game that he had, how much togetherness the staff and the players had in that time. I think me and my teammates and the technical staff, including the manager, want to recreate that, and recreate winning trophies too.”
