Bruno Fernandes has revealed the conversation he had with Chris Kavanagh moments before the referee made a decision that was a huge turning point in United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.
Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace displayed a never-say-die attitude that has been missing from the side until Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager. The former Manchester United stalwart has impressed fans and pundits as he seemingly transformed the side overnight.
Under Ruben Amorim, going a goal down to Crystal Palace may have triggered a collapse in performance, but under Carrick, there is a greater amount of belief in the side, which is rare after such a poor first-half performance.
Whatever Carrick said to the side during the break worked as United scored two in the second half to secure all three points and move up to third place in the Premier League, a goal that seemed unreachable just a few months ago.
However, the Red Devils were also undoubtedly dealt some good luck after Maxence Lacroix hauled down Matheus Cunha in the box and received a red card for his troubles. A decision that acted as a huge turning point in the match.
Fernandes reveals Kavanagh conversation
Bruno Fernandes played a key role in United’s comeback, scoring the first goal and setting up the second, in a second-half performance that stood in stark contrast to the first. Fernandes was also the player who threaded in Cunha and somewhat caused the penalty.
United’s captain has revealed the conversation he had with the game’s referee, Chris Kavanagh, just moments before Lacroix was shown a red card and before the Portuguese international went on to convert the penalty.
Fernandes revealed: “The referee told me straight away that it was a penalty, but he was trying to determine if it was a red card. We know that when it is a push or pull and no intention to go for the ball, it is a red card.”
The decision was contentious, as it seemed Cunha was looking for the foul whilst falling to the ground, and waited to enter the penalty area before making the tumble. However, this behaviour is what United have been missing over the last few seasons, a win by any means mentality.’

Fernandes’ importance to United
Bruno Fernandes is a player who sparks huge debates among United fans, usually due to his petulant behaviour on the pitch. But what no one can argue is his ability to be a match-winner as he proved again in Sunday’s victory at Old Trafford.
Providing a goal and an assist in the second half of the match ultimately secured the victory and moved his side into the top three. Under Carrick, Fernandes has returned to his best, which is no doubt a result of being moved back to his favoured eight role in the squad.

Rumours were swirling in January regarding a move away from Manchester for the 31-year-old, and it seemed at one point he was destined for the Saudi Pro League.
However, this deal did not come to fruition, much to the delight of many United fans, as Bruno has now seemingly cemented his role in the club’s long-term plans and will hopefully continue to display his quality for years to come.
