Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he recommended a friend pay attention to Kobbie Mainoo years before the Englishman broke into the United first team.

Mainoo, 18, has become a staple of the United team this season, breaking into the squad amidst an injury crisis at United.

Starting his eighth consecutive game for United, Mainoo has become a staple of Erik ten Hag’s starting XI weekly, earning the praise of both his manager and teammates.

In a report earlier this week, it had been revealed that the Manchester United squad, including Fernandes, believe that Mainoo should be one of the first names on the Ten Hag’s teamsheet.

Speaking after Mainoo scored a superb late winner in United’s thrilling 4-3 away win against Wolves, Fernandes would say the following about his teammate:

“He’s a big talent, I have said it in the past. I saw him playing for the U18s two or three years ago, and I said to a friend that was in Manchester who wanted to see some youth games the name of Kobbie.

“Without knowing that he would have this talent, [be] this player. The talent was there we knew as a kid, but he’s better as a kid than a player but he will be in the future equally.”

Mainoo’s winning goal against Wolves marked his second goal in as many games for United, having scored his first senior goal for the club against Newport County last weekend.

Praise for Mainoo has stretched well past United’s first-team set-up, with U21s player/coach Tom Huddlestone extensively praising Mainoo last month.

Huddlestone would heap praise on Mainoo’s “decision-making, composure, and game intelligence” despite being just eighteen years old.
