Bruno Fernandes praised one of his Manchester United teammates after the Reds secured an important victory over Sunderland on the weekend.
Manchester United ran out 2-0 winners over Sunderland at Old Trafford, securing all three points thanks to two goals in the opening half.
Mason Mount set the tone with a sharp finish from the edge of the area, and Benjamin Šeško quickly added a second after meeting a long throw from Diogo Dalot.
Sunderland were handed a controversial penalty just before the break, but VAR intervened and the referee overturned the decision after checking the monitor.
The second half brought few clear opportunities, but United stayed in control and saw out the game comfortably to claim their third victory and first clean sheet of the season.
Fernandes praises ‘top quality’ United teammate
It was quite strange that Leny Yoro was dropped to the bench for games against Chelsea and Brentford after his solid start to the season.
United were clearly missing his athleticism in the backline as the lost to the Bees and Amorim decided to bring him back into the team to face Sunderland.
Yoro excelled on the right side of the back three. It was his willingness to attack the final third which led to the throw-in for United’s second goal of the game.
After the game, the French defender took to Instagram to celebrate the victory. “Together, no matter what,” he wrote.
In the comments, club captain Bruno Fernandes made his feelings clear about Yoro’s performance. “Top quality,” the Portuguese star replied with a hands clapping emoji.
Yoro has major advantage at wide centre-back
In Amorim’s system, the wide centre-backs have the most responsibility out of any role in the squad. They are crucial in and out of possession, and if they are not on their game, the team will suffer.
Matthijs de Ligt has looked solid when he has played in the wide role but Yoro’s athleticism is a major advantage he has over almost any other option Amorim has.
While he was dropped for two games, it feels unlikely that Yoro will be out of the team for many more matches this season as he brings important attributes to the table.
In a similar fashion, it is surprising that Ayden Heaven has not been awarded any chances to play so far this term due to his ability on the ball and to press.
Both players have the exact kind of attributes you need as a defender if you are going to succeed in Amorim’s style of football.
