Bruno Fernandes praises Man United transfer decision after Euro 2024 progression
Bruno Fernandes has praised one Manchester United transfer decision after he helped guide Portugal to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.
Fernandes, 29, netted one of the three spot kicks that sent Portugal into the next round after a valiant effort from Slovenia on the night.
Meanwhile, United have confirmed the addition of Dan Ashworth as sporting director and also have announced that goalkeeper Tom Heaton will be staying at the club after signing a one-year extension.
Heaton’s contract ran out on Monday, but the experienced shot-stopper will now remain at the club. This gives exciting prospects such as Elyh Harrison the opportunity to either keep getting game time in the youth teams or move out on loan and gain experience.
Bruno Fernandes took to Instagram to react to the decision, writing: “Well deserved big man.”
The United captain hailed Heaton’s influence last month after he was called into the England squad as a training goalkeeper for Euro 2024. “Great leaders are always welcome in any place. Congratulations big man,” he said.
Heaton returned to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021, and while he has only made three appearances since then, the experienced goalie has been valuable behind the scenes.
Speaking on his extension, the 37-year-old said: “I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club. I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead.
“In addition to on the pitch, I’m learning so much off it for the next steps in my career, whatever that may be, but first and foremost I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season.”
