Bruno Fernandes: Man Utd suspension length explained after red card ban confusion
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the third time this season during the defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day.
Ruben Amorim’s side suffered their fourth defeat in five Premier League matches, losing 2-0 to Wolves earlier this week.
Despite dominating possession in the first half, the Reds struggled to pose a real threat against Vitor Pereira’s team, who were more energetic and physical throughout the game.
United’s challenges deepened early in the second half when Bruno Fernandes was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Wolves broke the deadlock when Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner – the second time in a week United conceded such a goal, with Son Heung-min doing the same last Thursday.
In stoppage time, Wolves secured a second goal. Alejandro Garnacho lost the ball on the left wing, allowing Cunha to orchestrate a counter-attack and set up Hee-Chan Hwang for an easy finish.
Fernandes suspension confusion
Fernandes was deservedly sent off at the Molineux Stadium and United will now miss him through suspension, but there was some initial confusion surrounding the length of his ban.
Usually, being sent off for two bookable offences means a player will have a one-match ban, but it was the midfielders’ second time being shown red in the Premier League this season, which usually indicates that the suspension will be extended.
However, this confusion was clarified by reporters on Thursday night, with the explanation being that Fernandes would not have an additional suspension since his first red card was overturned.
The United captain was shown a straight red card earlier this season in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur but the club later won an appeal against the decision.
This means that Fernandes will only have a one-match ban, missing the home game against Newcastle on Monday evening. He will be available for the trip to Liverpool next week.
United have big problem vs Newcastle
There are many difficult games coming up and Newcastle will be one of them considering the form they are currently in.
Eddie Howe’s side have won four of their last five games and have risen to fifth in the Premier League table after some impressive results.

Their intensity, especially in the midfield, is well known and United have a big problem against the Magpies to deal with that energy.
Without Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, who also has a one-game suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season against Wolves, there are limited options in the engine room.
Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro all would likely have troubles out of possession in this game. Ugarte has been in fantastic form and will be a big miss for this game.
Amorim will likely make some changes to the team in the hope that he will get a response from the players that have disappointed in recent weeks.
