Manchester United dropped points for the first time in 10 games against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening as Michael Olise’s last-minute free-kick cancelled out Bruno Fernandes’ opener.

The clash at Selhurst Park was slightly demoralising for Erik ten Hag’s men. They dropped points and Casemiro picked up the dreaded fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he misses United’s trip to play Arsenal on Sunday.

However, before that occurred, Scott McTominay was denied a penalty after being brought down inside the Palace box. It was checked by VAR and this time it didn’t go United’s way.

After a controversial decision helped The Reds in their victory against Manchester City, the United manager does not believe they can focus on decisions from the officials to ensure three points.

“You have to accept the decisions from VAR, from the referees. I look in the mirror, I look to my team, I look to my own managing and coaching and I say invest more for the second goal then you avoid situations you are dependent on the referee,” he told reporters.

“We are improving but we have to invest more in the second half to make the win and then the game is over. Mentality and attitude – there is still space for improvement.”

Fernandes was the recipient of the offside decision last weekend and the United midfielder scored again this time to put United in the lead.

His composed finish after a good move on the left side made it 100 goal contributions since the Portugal international arrived at Old Trafford. That was just less than three years ago.

“Scott [McTominay] got onto the ball, the guy from Palace tried to tackle him but decisions can go either way. We can’t be worried about now, it’s gone,” added Bruno.
