Bruno Fernandes seemed to disagree with Erik ten Hag’s assessment after Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat against Liverpool on the weekend.

Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, with Erik ten Hag’s team putting in a poor performance.

The Reds faced an early scare when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal was overturned for offside after a VAR check, but it didn’t take long for Liverpool to open the scoring.

Casemiro lost the ball, which led to a goal from Luis Diaz, and a similar mistake from him allowed Liverpool to score a second just before halftime.

Despite Casemiro being substituted before the second half, Ten Hag’s tactics were still questionable. Kobbie Mainoo lost possession, leading to the third and final goal.

On the surface, it seemed that all three goals were down to individual errors. Although, some would argue that it was a consequence of the build-up structure under Ten Hag.

Ultimately, the manager’s assessment after the game was that individual errors cannot be made against a team like Liverpool, who will “kill you” with their attacks.

“It’s difficult because when you talk about individual errors because you know against Liverpool, they’re very good in the turnovers,” Ten Hag told Bein Sports.

“I think the structures were right in the moment, especially the first goal and the second one.

“The third goal you can debate I think we were not sure about the right or the left side of the rest defence, but the first two goals, you can’t change when you make mistakes against a good time like Liverpool, they will kill you.”

Club captain Bruno Fernandes also spoke to the media after the defeat but his message seemed to directly contrast his manager’s comments.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Fernandes was asked about the individual errors made in the game but he stated that goals are always self-inflicted, and that there should be no finger pointing about making it ‘individual’.

“The goals are always self-inflicted,” he said. “You need to commit a mistake to give them the goal. We don’t need to be pointing fingers at everyone. That won’t help us now.

“When you concede a goal you can’t just point at one mistake. What’s the point in saying Casemiro lost the ball or Kobbie [Mainoo] lost the ball? They lost the ball because they wanted to be brave. It’s part of football. Don’t make it individual.

“Casemiro is more experienced than me. I don’t need to tell him anything, he knows what football is about. He’s played for the two best clubs in the world.

“Kobbie is an excellent kid. I want him to try more and do this because it’s part of his game. They are huge players for us and will keep being.”
