Bruno Fernandes was full of praise for one Manchester United teammate after the 2-1 win over Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Manchester United claimed a crucial three points in dramatic fashion, overcoming an 88th-minute equaliser from Rangers thanks to a stoppage-time winner by Bruno Fernandes.

Ruben Amorim’s team displayed a mixed performance, reflecting their current confidence levels. Despite that, they managed to secure a vital Europa League victory.

The Reds took the lead early in the second half when Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland inadvertently punched a Christian Eriksen corner into his own net.

Rangers appeared to have salvaged a point when Cyriel Dessers struck an equaliser in the 88th minute after a long ball forward stunned the United defence.

However, just four minutes later, Fernandes and Lisandro Martínez combined brilliantly to score a decisive winner, sealing a hard-fought victory for United.

Ferdinand praised “fantastic” Collyer

Toby Collyer started the game and impressed after looking sharp in multiple appearances off the bench in recent weeks.

After the 3-1 win over Southampton last week, Collyer helped turn the game in United’s favour after being introduced in the second half.

“I really like him, I think he’s got great energy, he’s done that a few times off the bench,” Rio Ferdinand said about Collyer on his YouTube channel after that game.

“[He] gives us that extra pair of legs to get amongst it. Looks confident, wants to take the ball. I like what I’ve seen so far.

“He’s fantastic physically [and] the way Amorim wants to play, what you’ve got to be is mobile, and he’s that.”

After those performances, Collyer grasped his deserved start with both hands and managed to put in another solid display against Rangers.

“He’s done the simple things well,” Ferdinand added on TNT Sports after Collyer was substituted to a standing ovation on Thursday night.

“Got to people, worked very hard. A good night’s work for him, first European game – well done.”

Fernandes very pleased with Collyer at United

Fernandes played alongside Collyer in the midfield until the 21-year-old was substituted mid-way through the second half.

The match-winner was extremely pleased with the impact of the Academy graduate and the way he is conducting himself behind the scenes at Carrington.

“He is a great kid, a great example of a professional,” Fernandes told club media after full-time when asked about Collyer.

“He’s a great example of someone who comes from the academy and knows his place, knows how much he wants to get into the positions of other players.

“He trains very well every week, trains at the maximum level. He’s a really good kid who wants to learn. He’s eager to learn and listen and he has big, big qualities.

“He’s aggressive off the ball, he’s aggressive running with the ball, he’s class in tight spaces, and he is just going to get better.”
