Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl was full of praise for Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho after he opened his goalscoring account on the weekend.

Sancho, 23, rejoined the German club on loan in the January transfer window after a major fallout with United manager Erik ten Hag.

He had failed to score in his opening eight games for Dortmund, with a muscular injury sandwiched between those matches, but he has since ended that drought with a wonderful goal.

On Saturday afternoon, in the Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen, the winger was able to skip past one defender before dispatching a cool finish into the back of the net.

Following on from full-time, the German club’s sporting director Kelh stated that everyone at Dortmund was pleased for the 23-year-old and believed it would give him a boost for the rest of the season.

“Doing something like that, you can, of course, see what a great footballer he is,” he told reporters. “You can see how he can make a difference, especially in one-on-one situations.

“Everyone is happy for Jadon because they saw how hard he was working and how willing he was to help the team. Goals help. He’s had one or two assists before, but this goal will help him and give him a boost.”

However, the Dortmund chief also appeared to send a dig towards Ten Hag and United when discussing Sancho’s difficulties so far.

He believes the winger being out of action for so long has impacted him, similarly to when players return from long-term injuries.

“You should not forget that he didn’t play for a long time. It’s like when a player has a cruciate ligament injury and is out for a long time. We need him, and we will again on Wednesday and for the coming weeks.”
