“Big asset…” – Harry Maguire reacts after Manchester United addressed £130m demand he made three months ago

Harry Maguire has reacted to good news at Manchester United after the club addressed a demand he made three months ago in May.

Manchester United have made a strong start to their pre-season campaign this summer, with three games played and a particularly impressive win against Bournemouth.

The Reds are determined to put their disappointing 2024/25 season behind them, having ended the Premier League campaign in a lowly 15th place.

Ruben Amorim arrived at Old Trafford in November last year, but struggled to deliver an instant turnaround and is working hard to change that.

He is supported by two top quality signings from this summer in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both who are expected to play key roles for United this season.

Maguire reacts after United addressed demand he made

United’s lack of quality in the squad was clear to see last season and a clear concern which Harry Maguire highlighted in an interview in early May.

The ex-captain demanded that quality signings needed to be made this summer to make the squad more competitive heading into the new campaign.

“We need more players in the summer, we need help. I want as many as we can [players] to make the squad competitive so people can compete for places,” the defender said at the time.

The additions of Cunha and Mbeumo for £130 million address exactly what Maguire was highlighting and he has now spoken glowingly about the attacking pair.

“It’s great to to get players in the door at this club,” Maguire told club media when asked about the impact of Mbeumo and Cunha so far.

“I want to play with the best players possible to make our squad as strong as possible so it’s great to get those two in.

“I think last year they proved that they’re goalscorers, they can create and last year we struggled in that aspect so it’s great to have them in, two great lads.

“I’m sure they’re going to be a big asset to this to this club and this team and I think we’ll probably see them both tomorrow [vs Everton] so hopefully they can put on a good performance for the fans.”

Improving squad morale with signings

Squad morale seems to be at a high level in pre-season and a lot of that could be down to the new signings. There is a clear confidence that Mbeumo and Cunha improve United’s attacking unit so much.

Maguire’s previous comments made it clear that the players in the squad were aware that they needed help. That is exactly what is happening now and that is helping the others improve their levels.

Everyone at United will be aware that one game a week means that rotation is not needed on a weekly basis. If you don’t fight for a spot in the team you will not get time on the pitch.

That should ideally turn into the kind of healthy competition that Amorim is desperate for within his squad.
