Manchester United striker Benjamin Šeško suffered a knee injury in the latest encounter against Tottenham Hotspur and will miss international fixtures over the coming weeks.
Benjamin Šeško was forced off during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham at the weekend after a strong challenge from Micky van de Ven.
The Slovenian striker, who came on in the second half, was unable to make the impact fans had hoped for before being substituted again in the 87th minute. He has since undergone scans with the club’s medical team.
His injury left United down to ten men for the remainder of the match, as Ruben Amorim had already used all five of his substitutions. Fortunately, Matthijs de Ligt salvaged a point with a stoppage-time equaliser, extending United’s unbeaten run to five matches.
After the game, Amorim confirmed that Šeško had suffered a knee injury but admitted he was unsure of the extent of the damage. The club will be hoping it’s only a minor issue that sidelines the 22-year-old for a short spell, as a more serious setback would further limit United’s attacking options.
Šeško’s teammate breaks silence on knee injury
Players are now heading off for their international duties but Šeško is not expected to join up with his Slovenian teammates after his setback.
Speaking on the United striker’s knee injury, fellow Slovenia forward Andraz Sporar admitted: “We will have to do without him.”
The nation’s manager, Matjaž Kek, also explained how United have not yet explained the extent of Šeško’s injury and how he expects ‘maximum respect’ from the club.
Reports from MailSport claim that United are expected to produce an official announcement on Šeško’s injury status at some point on Monday. Fabrizio Romano has suggested that the feeling inside Old Trafford is that the striker does not have a serious issue that would keep him out for more than six months.
When speaking about the striker’s issue after the game on the weekend, Amorim said: “I’m concerned with the injury because it’s in the knee. We need Ben to be a better team. We have to check everything, we have to check what has happened with Ben.”
Zirkzee will be hoping for chance in United team
Joshua Zirkzee is yet to start a game for United this season and he will be hoping that Šeško’s issue gives him an opportunity to impress.
The Dutch forward was one of United’s best players in the second half of last season before he suffered a hamstring injury against Newcastle but he has fell behind in the pecking order.
Amorim has several options if Šeško is out of action for a while but his favourite would likely be playing Matheus Cunha through the middle and starting Mason Mount on the left.
If Zirkzee doesn’t end up getting a chance in the team, it could further influence his desire to depart the club in the mid-season transfer window.
