Benjamin Šeško will set instant Manchester United record amid Rúben Amorim transfer decision latest

Benjamin Šeško will set an instant record for Manchester United if he completes his possible transfer to Rúben Amorim’s squad this summer.

Manchester United have reportedly landed on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško as their new first-choice target for the centre-forward position.

Having already secured Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, and 18-year-old left-back Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno for a total of £130 million, they have turned their attention to signing a new centre-forward.

Bruno Fernandes was the club’s top goalscorer last season, netting 19 in all competitions, while only three other players hit double digits.

Therefore, Rúben Amorim has decided that a new central striker is the priority he needs heading into the new campaign, with Šeško seen as a perfect fit by United’s squad members.

Šeško yet to communicate final decision

On Friday evening, reports from Slovenia broke that Šeško had chosen to sign for Newcastle over Amorim’s club. However, it has since been clarified that a final decision is yet to be reached.

According to the MailOnline’s Craig Hope, who has been closely following Newcastle’s hunt for a new striker, Šeško is yet to confirm which club he has chosen to join.

In the week, there had been fears in Newcastle that the Slovenian international was leaning toward Old Trafford, but having presented their package and vision to the player, there is hope that his mind could be swayed.

It has been widely reported that Newcastle are prepared to pay Leipzig’s full demands for the striker and offer Šeško a larger salary compared to their Premier League counterparts.

Šeško would set immediate United record

Should Šeško choose United as his preferred destination this summer, he would set a record of becoming the first-ever Slovenian to play for the club.

Only six Slovenian players have ever played in the Premier League, with the most recent being Jon Gorenc Stanković, who played for Huddersfield Town during the 2018/19 campaign, while Haris Vučkić played for Newcastle during the 2011/12 and 2014/15 seasons.

Milenko Ačimovič was at Tottenham for one season, during the 2002/03 season, while Robert Koren was the only Slovenian to play for two Premier League clubs: West Brom (2008/09) and Hull City (2013/14).

The first was Aleš Križan with Barnsley during the 1997/98 campaign, while the final member of this group is Aleksander Rodić, who played for Portsmouth for the 2004/05 campaign.

No Slovenian player has ever played more than two seasons in the Premier League, so no matter if Šeško picks Newcastle or United, it’s likely he could become the first in his country to play three consecutive seasons in the competition.

If he were to join Amorim’s squad, he would be United’s first-ever Slovenian player, a piece of history that he would treasure no matter how his eventual career panned out.
