Benjamin Šeško addresses substitute role after Everton win with ‘have to start’ Michael Carrick message

Manchester United talisman Benjamin Šeško has revealed his opinions on his current substitute role for the Reds, explaining that he feels the team comes first.

Manchester United have come into form of late, last night’s 1-0 win on the road to Everton made it ten Premier League games unbeaten for the Reds.

A stale affair for the most part, United nevertheless came away with all three points and built on a weekend when top-four rivals Chelsea dropped points, and sixth-place Liverpool rescued a win at Nottingham Forest.

Senne Lammens gained most of the attention for his heroic saves in the net. The Everton attack was relentless, but the Belgian giant remained firm and kept a crucial clean sheet.

Summer signing Benjamin Šeško scored again, and his form is starting to raise speculation about whether his talents are wasted on the bench, as he addressed this in a post-match press conference after the Everton win.

“Everyone believes in me,” says Šeško

Šeško’s influence on the squad has gone somewhat under the radar. Despite a slow start, the Slovenian has scored seven goals in 22 matches and recorded one assist so far this season.

The 22-year-old’s impact has been reduced to a super-sub role, though fans still believe his ability is wasted on the bench.

Šeško is yet to be discouraged. The striker scored late in the Fulham game to rescue all three points, rescued a point again at West Ham in the 96th minute, and scored the eventual winner last night on the road to Everton.

When asked about his lack of starts for the Reds, Šeško explained that he currently does not think about whether or not Carrick starts him, as his main goal continues to be to help the team however is deemed best.

“Everyone believes in me, and they are getting me ready to start as soon as possible. It’s more about me showing up when it’s important, no matter how many minutes I get. I’m focused on delivering and trying to help the team secure the wins.”

Šeško’s nobility is refreshing. After a year of attacking incompetence, the team’s lowest goal and points tally in the Premier League, and three failed offensive signings, hearing a striker who genuinely cares for the team shows the positive steps the club is taking.

“I’m getting settled in the league from game to game. Again, I’m not even thinking about “I have to start, I have to start”. Whenever the coach decides to put (me) on, I’m going to be there.” Šeško continued. Fans will surely anticipate a greater impact by the Slovenian in future games.

“Pressure… it doesn’t really affect me”

The weight on a Premier League striker’s shoulders is vast, and can sometimes ruin a player’s confidence, as with the case of underwhelming attacker Rasmus Hojlund.

Šeško does not seem to replicate that pressure, commenting further, “The way I look at the pressure (of scoring goals for United), it’s something that if I want to be a good player, it’s something that I have to have. I take it as a privilege.”

The 22-year-old’s overwhelming confidence is apparent, as we saw with his cool and collected finish in front of the imposing Jordan Pickford last night.

“It’s something that has [to be there] if you want to play at the highest level. It’s about accepting it and not really caring about it. It doesn’t really affect me.” Šeško rounded up, reminiscent of marquee striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, who lit up the Stretford end with his attacking prowess.

Michael Carrick will have a conundrum on his hands, with four in-form attackers and only three positions available. Šeško and the fans will be hoping for more opportunities, and for the points to keep coming in.
