Ben Foster believes that Manchester United are crying out for another signing this summer and one Premier League star would be his controversial pick.
Manchester United have secured the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon so far this summer and all of them have settled into the squad.
The Reds are also pushing to complete a deal for Benjamin Sesko, who favours a move to Old Trafford over Newcastle and has agreed personal terms with the club.
Should that signing be made, United would have spent over £200 million on their attacking rebuild but there are still other areas fans would like to see addressed.
The centre of midfield is one concern while another goalkeeper signing to come in is also on the agenda, and both of those signings could well come in the final weeks of the window.
Ben Foster says United are “crying out for” shock signing
There are major doubts over André Onana and the goalkeeping situation at United and ideally the club want to bring in a player who can challenge the Cameroon international better than Altay Bayındır.
Several shot-stoppers have been linked but ex-United keeper Ben Foster believes that Newcastle’s Nick Pope is an option his former club should consider after the Magpies signed Aaron Ramsdale.
“Manchester United are crying out for a goalkeeper, absolutely crying out for a goalkeeper,” he said on The Cycling GK podcast.
“Honestly, you’d do so much worse than getting Nick Pope. Man United don’t necessarily just go all-out play straight from the back; that’s not their style anyway.
“I think Nick Pope can still play out from the back, by the way. I’m not demeaning him; he can still play out from the back.
“But if you’re looking to get it to the forward areas as quickly as possible, Nick Pope is your boy. And he will stop goals, it’s as simple as that.”
Pope signing would be controversial
Pope would certainly be a controversial choice and not just amongst the fanbase but probably within the hierarchy at Old Trafford too.
Even though he would probably be happy to be a challenger to Onana, Pope is 33 years old and reports have suggested that United want a younger goalkeeper instead.

Pope already earns £60,000-a-week at St James’ Park and would likely want an improvement on that contract if he joined United.
As a backup ‘keeper, that is a significant sum to pay, especially when you already know what the player is like at their peak and certainly a deal that would split opinion in the fanbase.
