Manchester United are looking to complete a fifth signing this summer as Erik ten Hag continues to build his squad to compete for the Premier League title.

Manchester United opened the 2024 transfer window on a strong note, bringing in Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and beating Real Madrid to land Leny Yoro from Lille.

These acquisitions, totalling £88 million, necessitated player sales to fund further moves. Erik ten Hag responded by approving the exits of Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala, and Alvaro Fernandez, among others.

United then shifted their focus to reinforcing key positions, particularly in midfield, right back, and centre back, as the window is now set to enter the final few weeks.

On Thursday evening, it was confirmed that United had signed Bayern Munich pair Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui for a combined initial £50 million.

Two summers ago, Ten Hag brought in André Onana in goal, which meant that former United academy star shot-stopper Matej Kovar had to leave the club for a fee of just over £4 million.

In a recent interview, the now Bundesliga player, who was a trophy winner with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023/24, addressed his initial move to United and the possibility of returning to Old Trafford in the future.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to leave everything behind at that age: the country, my friends, my family,” he said to Rheinische Post when asked about joining United when he was just 17 years old.

“But when Manchester United calls, you don’t have to think long. For me, a childhood dream came true. I had to take that chance.

“I was there for five years, enjoyed the time, met a lot of great people and matured as a goalkeeper and a person. I’m grateful for the experiences. Of course, there were ups and downs, but they’re part of life. Maybe I’ll come back one day; that would be nice.”
