The Europa League semi-final match-up between Manchester United sees a structured and well-thought-out team welcome Rúben Amorim’s chaotic Reds to Spain on Thursday evening.
Manchester United have completed their preparations as they head to Bilbao ahead of Thursday afternoon’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Athletic Club — a key moment in Rúben Amorim’s early reign as manager.
The Reds arrive in Spain full of belief after a remarkable quarter-final turnaround against Olympique Lyonnais, where Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire struck in quick succession to seal a dramatic 7-6 win on aggregate.
Their Premier League form, however, has been less convincing. A 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers and a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth — rescued by a stoppage-time goal from Rasmus Højlund — have highlighted ongoing domestic struggles.
But with the focus now entirely on Europe, United will look to carry their knockout momentum into a packed San Mamés, aiming to take a vital step toward the final with a strong first-leg performance.
United’s Attack: Plenty of chances but room for improvement
United average 2.19 goals per 90 in the Europa League, closely matching their xG (Expected Goals) of 2.13 — a contrast to their domestic struggles. Fernandes leads the team in goals (5) and progressive passes (113), and has also chipped in with three assists (3.6 xAG (Expected Assisted Goals)), despite a deeper role.
Højlund has five goals from 4.3 non-penalty xG, while Alejandro Garnacho has scored just once from the same xG figure. His four assists show his value as a creator, but his finishing remains a question. The return of Amad (two goals from 1.4 npxG) provides United with an extra outlet who can carry the ball and make smart decisions in wide areas.
Athletic’s Attack Without Nico
Athletic have scored 1.75 goals per 90 and conceded just 0.83. They’ve leaned on the efficiency of the Williams brothers, especially Nico (+2.2 np:G-xG), who’s injury status is still in the air. He leads the team in carries and progressive receptions, and his absence changes the shape of their threat.
Álex Berenguer, with 12 Europa League appearances, is likely to step in should Nico Williams be unavailable. He’s a solid crosser (56 total, 13 key passes), but not as explosive. Athletic may rely more on Iñaki Williams in transition, targeting space behind United’s full-backs. Oihan Sancet is another option to attack crosses and make late runs into the box.

Goalkeeper Form: Contrast in Confidence
Agirrezabala has been strong in Europe (75.8% save rate, +2.0 PSxG+/- (Post-Shot Expected Goals)), though he’s still second choice in La Liga. Onana, meanwhile, has underwhelmed (70.5% save rate, -1.0 PSxG+/-) and carries the burden of some notable mistakes.
Things to Watch
- Athletic’s adjustments without Nico Williams
- Garnacho’s finishing
- Midfield tempo: Fernandes vs Galarreta
- Goalkeeper impact
This has the feel of a close tie shaped by key absences, returning players, and moments of quality at both ends.
