“At the heart of everything…” James Maddison full of praise for ‘top’ Man Utd star after Wolves display

A Premier League star has praised one Manchester United star following his performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manchester United recorded their biggest victory of the season as Ruben Amorim’s men dismantled a very poor Wolverhampton Wanderers side on Monday night.

United started the game on the front foot, as expected. Diogo Dalot had a major chance to put United ahead within ten minutes, but Sam Johnstone intervened with an impressive save.

Wolves couldn’t keep it together for long though as Bruno Fernandes put United ahead after 25 minutes of play at the Molineux. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde equalised just before the interval, scoring the first goal of the Rob Edwards era.

United were quick to stamp their authority in the second-half though and destroy any kind of hope Wolves would’ve had. Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount scored the second and third goals respectively, before Fernandes calmly converted a penalty for United’s fourth of the evening.

Maddison full of praise for Fernandes

Manchester United recorded 27 shots against Wolves, and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison was asked what the key was to United’s ability to create chances on Monday night.

Maddison said: “Bruno is at the heart of everything.

“He’s, Bruno’s just such a top player like it’s, I actually think Bruno’s, he doesn’t have a massive part in that goal, he still has the ball in the build-up, but the other goals as well, he’s just, I think he’s actually probably underrated to many Bruno.

“I know he gets a lot of applauders anyway, but I still think he is kind of underrated, like for the, for the quality that he shows consistently.”

Fernandes is United’s best player

A lot has been said about Ruben Amorim’s decision to use Fernandes in a deeper role. While Fernandes is more effective higher up the pitch, even in a deeper role, he is still comfortably United’s most influential player.

The one positive about playing in a deeper role if Fernandes’ passing range is maximised. His pass over the top to send Dalot through on goal in the 8th minute was the perfect example of this.

Fernandes has consistently been the most creative player in the Premier League since joining United from Sporting Lisbon in 2020. Even this season, operating in a deeper role, he has still created at least nine more chances than any other player in the league.

When things go badly at United, Fernandes always comes under scrutiny, but most of the criticism is largely misguided. The Portuguese international is comfortably the best player in this squad and would not look out of place in some of United’s best teams under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United need Bruno Fernandes. It’s almost impossible to imagine this team without him. Whether he’s at his best or not, he is United’s most important player, and it’s not even close.
