Manchester United salvaged a 2-2 draw against Everton in their latest Premier League clash after VAR controversy came at the end of the game.

Everton dominated Ruben Amorim’s side in the first half, with Beto opening the scoring before Abdoulaye Doucouré doubled their lead.

Although United showed little improvement after the break, they were handed a lifeline when Bruno Fernandes curled in a superb free-kick, injecting some much-needed momentum.

Manuel Ugarte then capitalized on the shift in energy, rifling in a well-struck half-volley to equalize, with substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Chido Obi making an impact.

In the dying moments, Everton were awarded a penalty after former United player Ashley Young went down following a challenge from Harry Maguire.

However, after a VAR review, referee Andy Madley was advised to check the pitch-side monitor and ultimately overturned his decision, sparing United from defeat.

Young breaks silence on United penalty controversy

After the game, the Premier League explained that the penalty decision was changed as there was no foul made by Maguire, suggesting that Young went down too early.

The 39-year-old spent nine years at Old Trafford and was well-known in his early years for diving, so much so that Sir Alex Ferguson spoke to him about it.

However, despite his history, Young still seems convinced that the decision on the weekend was the wrong one.

The veteran took to Instagram on Saturday evening to react to the result and penalty decision, referencing one of Jose Mourinho’s most famous quotes.

“A point’s a point, onwards and upwards!” he wrote. “Decisions, Angles 👀🤷🏾‍♂️ “I prefer not to speak, if I speak I am in big trouble” UTFT 💙”

United have bigger concerns than penalty drama

There has been a lot of focus on the last-minute penalty drama which has somewhat distracted from United’s dreadful performance until Fernandes’ free-kick goal.

Too many times this season supporters have gone, ‘this is the worst performance of the season’ and it was the same at Goodison Park.

“We just played one half and we managed to draw the game. We didn’t exist in the first half,” Amorim claimed after the match.

It feels like time is running out for the team to find any sort of consistency this season. The biggest problem seems to be confidence being on the floor.

Amorim has a lot of problems at Old Trafford that he needs to try and fix.
