With the January transfer window fast approaching, Antonie Semenyo has been warned about his decision to join Manchester City over Manchester United.
Manchester United have an extensive list of players they are looking to add to its rotation. Since Ruben Amorim’s arrival last season, the Portuguese head coach has been desperately trying to get the club back to its title-winning ways, however, he has so far been unsuccessful.
Despite United performing far better in the Premier League than they did earlier in the season, the club is still looking at what tweaks can be made to their squad to become a team fighting for the title.
One player that United have been closely linked with is Bournemouth winger, Antonie Semenyo. Due to Semenyo’s successful run fr the Cherries, many Premier League sides have had their interests piqued by the 25-year-old.
Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool have all been linked with Semenyo in the lead-up to the transfer window; however, it seems to be Manchester that has caught the Ghanaian’s eye. Both United and Manchester City appear to be the two clubs fighting to put pen to paper, with the question arising of whether he’ll end up in red or blue in the new year.
Is Semenyo ‘making a mistake’
Last week, the news that Semenyo had chosen City as his preference took over the football world, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stating that Man City “remain convinced” that they will be the team to seal the deal on the Ghanaian.
City is more attractive than United, with the Blues sitting higher in the table than United, just two points off the top spot. They can also offer Semenyo Champions League minutes, something that Amorim’s side is unable to give to the winger.
These facts alone almost make the idea that Semenyo would take the City shirt over United inevitable; however, reports have come out that those who are close to Semenyo are worried he is ‘making a mistake’ by not choosing United.
The iPaper reported that, ‘sources close to Semenyo believe he is perhaps making a mistake in joining City, given he would not be a guaranteed starter’. Whereas in Amorim’s squad he would almost be the perfect fit, guaranteed a place in the starting 11.
The report also shared that, ‘If the besieged United boss sticks with his beloved 3-4-3 system, Semenyo could slot in as an attacking wing-back, on the opposite flank to Amad Diallo.’
‘The deal is not signed yet, but City are confident they have won the race. United will therefore try look for an alternative, but they were interested in Semenyo as an individual – they will not necessarily look for another wide option.’
Why would United be a better fit
With Semenyo signing for City looking increasingly likely, questions are arising about whether he is making a mistake. City has a packed squad with players like Phil Foden in his position; it would be unlikely for him to get guaranteed minutes.
Although at City you are likely to win titles, your development as a player can flatline with so many other huge names in the squad, this may hinder Semenyo’s ability to continue to make the same progress he is at Bournemouth.

This makes United seem a more fitting team for Semenyo. Amorim’s side can give him immediate minutes ensuring development but it appears unlikely he will choose that path.
