Angel Gomes recalls “very difficult” Manchester United exit as potential transfer return emerges
Former Manchester United prospect Angel Gomes has admitted how difficult it was to leave the club admist reports linking him with a return to the Premier League.
Gomes, 24, left United in 2020, moving to French side Lille at the end of his contract with the Red Devils, in a bid to secure first-team football.
Spending a year on loan at Portuguese side Boavista, Gomes has since become an integral member of Lille’s squad amounting over 100 appearances for the club.
Last season marked Gomes’ most successful at the Ligue 1 side, finishing the season as the league’s joint top assister, as Lille qualified for the Champions League for the first time in several years.
Discussing his exit from the Premier League, Gomes admitted leaving United was the hardest part of his career so far:
“I’d say the hardest point was obviously leaving England,” Gomes explained to the media whilst on international duty with England (via Beanyman Sports.) “Going to Portugal, into the unknown… there was a project there for me to kind of immerse myself into but I never knew how it was going to go.
“It was a step into the unknown for me and then obviously going to France afterwards; learning a new language, adapting to the country, adapting to the football… it was a very difficult time for me to adapt to all of it.
“I knew in the long run, if I stuck to it, that I would be able to get to where I want to get to.”
In recent weeks, Gomes has been linked with a return to the Premier League, with Tottenham reportedly linked with a most for the attacking midfielder.
Gomes has entered the final year of his Lille contract, with no confirmation on if he will remain at the French outfit past the end of this season.
Elsewhere, it had been reported by Team Talk that United are “keeping tabs” on their former prodigy, in case he becomes available next summer.
