Ange Postecoglou confirms he tried to sign Manchester United star at Spurs, “I wanted…”

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that he tried to sign one of Manchester United’s best players a couple of years ago.

Manchester United came out victorious against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend after goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes secured the three points.

Thomas Frank was already under pressure as the Spurs manager and he has since been sacked following another defeat to Newcastle this week.

He was the man who replaced Ange Postecoglou last summer despite the fact that the Australian had won the Europa League final against United, securing Spurs’ first trophy since 2008.

Postecoglou has been speaking about his time in North London this week and also confirmed that he wanted to sign a current United star.

Postecoglou appeared on The Overlap on Thursday shortly after Frank’s sacking had been confirmed and he expressed his true opinions on his former club.

One of the topics he spoke about was their lack of ambition in the transfer market, explaining how Spurs are not willing to match the wage demands of top players.

He wanted to sign proven Premier League players after his first season in England, and among his targets was Mbeumo, who played for Brentford at the time.

“We ended up signing Dom Solanke, I really liked him, and three teenagers,” explained Postecoglou when speaking about the 2024 summer transfer window.

“I was looking at Pedro Neto, Mbeumo, Semenyo at the time, Marc Guehi, I was saying we need [these signings] if we’re going to go from fifth to there, that’s what the other big clubs would do.”

Mbeumo would instead move to Old Trafford in the following summer after hitting 20 goals in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, with the forward snubbing Spurs once again.

Mbeumo provides in important moments

Mbeumo had been an in-demand forward for many teams in the Premier League, and United will be happy with his first season so far.

The winger has 10 goals for the club so far and grabbed his second assist of the season when he set up Benjamin Šeško’s winner against West Ham.

He might not always perform amazingly but the 26-year-old provides quality in the most important moments of the game and that had been something United were missing.

It still feels like he is adapting to the way Carrick wants to play, and is often having to peel off to the left rather than his preferred right side, but he’s still getting the important goals and that is good for United.
