André Onana has shown his true colours as a leader at Manchester United following their 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

Manchester United recorded their third Europa League draw of the season as they were held to a 1-1 tie by Fenerbahce.

Christian Eriksen put United in front with a superb strike from the edge of the box in the first half, his fourth goal of the season, giving Erik ten Hag‘s side a deserved lead at the interval.

However, Fenerbahce hit back early in the second half, with Youssef En-Nesyri rising above Victor Lindelöf to head in from close range after a pinpoint cross from Allan Saint-Maximin.

Both teams made several substitutions in search of a winner, but neither side could capitalise on their chances, resulting in a hard-fought draw in a fiery contest in Istanbul.

Onana’s admission

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Onana admitted that it was a big disappointment that United threw away a lead and could not secure anything more than a draw, once again showing his true colours as a leader within the team.

“It’s a big disappointment for me, for the fans, for the club,” he explained in an interview following the fixture.

“As a Manchester player, you have an obligation to try to win, and that’s what we did today. But also we have to recognise it’s a tough place to win.

“We didn’t win, at least we didn’t lose. Not happy, of course not, but we move on. We are big guys, we take responsibility. Me, the first one, and we go again.”

Mourinho’s reaction

Onana made a fantastic double save in the first half, helping United hold their lead into halftime. The acrobatic move was so stunning that it even stunned Jose Mourinho on the sidelines.

Following the result, Mourinho explained that he felt Onana was the Man of the Match and that his “incredible” double save should be praised.
