André Onana addresses Manchester United’s captain position following Rangers win
André Onana enjoyed his first minutes back as a Manchester United player following the FA Cup final win as they faced Rangers in a pre-season friendly in Scotland.
Manchester United showed significant improvement compared to their summer opener against Rosenborg, with standout performances from Jadon Sancho, Toby Collyer, and Amad Diallo.
It was Amad who broke the deadlock after half an hour, scoring against his former club. He skillfully cut inside from the right-wing byline, evaded his defender, and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot past Jack Butland, nestling the ball into the bottom left corner.

In the second half, manager Erik ten Hag made wholesale changes, substituting all 10 outfield players while keeping André Onana in goal to ensure everyone got ample playing time.
The second half began at a slow pace but came alive when Joe Hugill struck United’s second goal. He fired a shot from the edge of the area that crashed off the underside of the bar and into the net after 70 minutes.
It also must be mentioned that André Onana was able to enjoy 90 minutes back in goal for Ten Hag after missing just one fixture across all competitions last season.
Onana is well known for being a big personality and leader within United’s dressing room. With Bruno Fernandes away on holiday, Onana stepped up to be captain against Rangers.
“It’s a big honour, being the captain of Manchester United,” he told United View.
“It’s also nice to play with young players because we were like them years ago. So we have tried to help them how our Big Brothers did in the past. So, for me, it was just enjoyable to do that.”
Ten Hag is known for not having a vice-captain but instead installing a leadership circle under Fernandes, of which Onana is clearly a member. It is thought that others in the circle include Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, and Luke Shaw.
