André Onana has shown his true colours with his honest reaction to Altay Bayındır’s heroic efforts as Manchester United defeated Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Altay Bayındır has had a tough time at Manchester United so far, having only appeared five times since he signed for the club 18 months ago on a five-year contract.

The Turkish international goalkeeper was brought in during the 2023 summer transfer window, just a few months after United released David de Gea and replaced him with Inter Milan’s André Onana.

Despite being brought in to compete with Onana for the goalkeeping spot, the 26-year-old was yet to be given the chance to shine, and many worried for his future when he failed to perform in a 4-3 loss against Tottenham Hotspur last month.

However, after denying Martin Odegaard from the spot against Arsenal in the FA Cup before saving Kai Havertz’s penalty in the shootout to guide United to a knockout win, many have lauded the player and see him as a genuine rival for Onana’s position.

Onana shows true colours with Bayındır comment

Speaking to club media about his teammate’s performance, Onana was nothing but delighted that the player he has worked with in the last 18 months, showing his true colours as a team player.

“We all congratulated him because he did a fantastic job. We are all proud of him,” said Onana.

“He’s here for a year and a half, or even more, and he’s working hard every day. Now he gets his reward. He deserves it.

“He invited us, by the way, to the restaurant [after the game] because he had such a nice performance. Hopefully, he’s going to invite us more, much more, because that means he will continue playing like this!”

He continued, saying: “I also want to thank our defenders, our midfielders, our strikers, the whole team. They were very tough.

“The staff and even us, we were on the bench and we were supporting them because we were fighting with 10 [men] for more than 55 minutes and, in the end, we won. That is the way to go. This is the right direction.

“We fight until the end with that patience, with that determination. I saw my guys giving everything.

“Returning against Arsenal away was not easy and, in the end of the game, we won the penalty [shootout]. It’s one of the nicest games I ever see, because winning that way is just unbelievable.”
