Amad reveals what Rúben Amorim told him before Manchester United hattrick heroics
Amad has revealed what Rúben Amorim told him before he scored a fantastic three Manchester United goals to sink Southampton on Thursday evening.
Amad stole the spotlight on Thursday evening, scoring a stunning 12-minute hat-trick to propel Manchester United to a dramatic 3-1 victory over Southampton in the Premier League.
The first half was a frustrating one for United. Despite dominating possession, they struggled to create clear opportunities, while Southampton looked sharp on the break. André Onana was called into action multiple times, pulling off brilliant saves to keep the visitors at bay.
Alejandro Garnacho came close midway through the half, but Southampton capitalised on United’s frailty at set-pieces, scoring from a corner just before half-time. It marked the fourth straight home game in which United had conceded first.
The second half saw Rúben Amorim shuffle the deck, introducing Antony for Kobbie Mainoo and moving Bruno Fernandes into a deeper role. Yet, the changes initially failed to inspire a breakthrough, with Antony squandering a golden opportunity from close range on the hour mark, much to the crowd’s dismay.
Just as the match seemed to be slipping away, Amad produced a moment of brilliance, smashing a ferocious shot past Aaron Ramsdale to equalise with under ten minutes left. Moments later, he latched onto an exquisite Christian Eriksen pass, slotting home to put United ahead.
In stoppage time, Amad put the result beyond doubt, overpowering Southampton’s defence to fire in his third goal of the night. His heroic display made him the first United player to score a hat-trick since Cristiano Ronaldo in April 2022, securing a vital three points and an unforgettable night at Old Trafford.
What Amorim told Amad before his hat-trick
Amad’s rise since Amorim joined United has been nothing short of spectacular, with the winger having contributed to 11 goals in 14 appearances since the 39-year-old’s arrival.
Additionally, the 22-year-old has been able to perform to a brilliant level both as a right-sided No. 10 and as a right wing-back, with his overall footballing quality.
Speaking in the mixed zone after United’s last-gasp win, Amad was asked about what Amorim told him to inspire his brilliant 12 minutes, to which he elaborated on the instructions his head coach gave him.
“I have to push, I have to go forward and be more aggressive in the final third and have the quality to score,” he said.
“When I’m on the pitch, I have to play free, so I’m so happy to have him because he’s here to help everyone and everyone is starting to understand his system, so we are very happy to follow him.”
What Amad said about his favourite position
Further, he was pushed to give an answer to which position he prefers playing between the No. 10 and wing-back roles.
“I prefer both,” said Amad. “Like I said to the manager, I’m ready to play anywhere where he wants me to play on the pitch, so I’m ready to fight, and I’m here to help this club and fight.
“Playing at right wing-back, I know you have to do a lot of running, you have to attack and have to defend also.
“Maybe I don’t have the same quality as Nouss [Mazraoui] because I’m more of a forward than a defender, so I push more. I’m so happy to score a hat-trick, but the most important thing is the win.”
