“Not enough…” Amad Diallo breaks silence on Manchester United struggles following Newcastle loss
Amad Diallo has spoken out following Manchester United’s embarrassing loss to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday evening.
Manchester United’s struggles deepened as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United secured a confident 2-0 victory at Old Trafford on Monday evening, leaving Rúben Amorim’s team searching for form and answers.
With key players Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte suspended, Joshua Zirkzee was handed a start in midfield. United’s hopes of a strong start quickly unravelled when Alexander Isak opened the scoring for Newcastle with a precise header just four minutes in.
Joelinton doubled the visitors’ lead in the 20th minute, rising highest to head home a second and put Newcastle firmly in control. In a bid to change the tide, Amorim made an early substitution, bringing on Kobbie Mainoo for Zirkzee after just 33 minutes.
United showed more intent after the break, creating a handful of opportunities, the best of which saw Harry Maguire’s header crash against the post. Despite their improved efforts, they could not find a way past Newcastle’s resolute defence.
Howe’s men saw out the game with professionalism, leaving Amorim’s Manchester United to face further scrutiny after another disappointing result in front of their home supporters.
Amad breaks silence after Newcastle loss
Amad Diallo has been Amorim’s best player since the 39-year-old took over as head coach of the squad, but he was ineffective as he played 90 minutes against Newcastle.
The loss has been taken hard by United fans and players alike, with Amorim himself admitting that Newcastle are simply a better side than his.
The day after the game, Amad took to social media to explain to United fans that a simple apology was not enough for the brutal 2024 fans endured. Still, he explained his gratitude for the consistent support.
“A very difficult year, apologizing is not enough,” he said on X. “But you have supported us and continued to do so throughout all this time… Thank you.”
Amorim offers hope for the future despite United’s loss
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the Newcastle loss, Amorim was honest in his assessment of his squad, but also offered hope to fans, explaining that he has seen plenty of positives as the side head into 2025.
“It’s really hard, I think it’s really hard on everybody and you feel it on the pitch,” Amorim admitted in his post-match press conference on Monday evening.
“I think we show some improvements in the first games, especially against [Manchester] City and Tottenham, even in Arsenal the first moment, but we are losing that because of the lack of training and the lack of belief after so many losses.
“Some difficult moments when you suffer some goals in the beginning of the games and then it’s really hard during all the games.
“So it’s a really tough moment for everybody and I think the players losing everything, the small things that we try to work on in training, after one goal, they lose everything because they don’t have the base, we don’t have time to build the base to cope with the difficult moments. So it’s really hard in this moment.”
