“I didn’t believe…” Amad Diallo makes surprising admission about Manchester United winner
Amad Diallo has revealed a surprising thought process that went through his head before his scored Manchester United’s winner against Man City on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United pulled off a sensational 2-1 comeback victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, with Amad Diallo’s late brilliance securing all three points for Rúben Amorim’s side in an unforgettable Premier League derby.
The match began evenly, with both teams eager to impose themselves, but United were dealt an early blow when Mason Mount had to be withdrawn due to injury just 15 minutes in.
City seized the momentum and took the lead shortly after, as Joško Gvardiol rose to meet Kevin de Bruyne’s deflected cross, heading home after a cleverly worked short corner.
United grew into the game in the second half, dominating possession but struggling to find a way through City’s disciplined defence. Bruno Fernandes came close with a golden opportunity in the final 10 minutes but couldn’t convert.
As time ticked away, Amad Diallo took centre stage. His quick feet drew a late penalty, and Fernandes stepped up to dispatch it confidently, leveling the score with five minutes to play.
With the game poised for a draw, Lisandro Martínez delivered a moment of magic, playing an exquisite long ball to Amad. The young winger showed extraordinary composure, rounding Ederson and finishing clinically to seal a stunning 2-1 victory for United in the dying moments.
Amad’s surprising admission
Speaking to MUTV after the game, Amad revealed that, rather surprisingly, when Martínez initially delivered the ball to him, he did not believe the ball would be good enough before he adjusted to score.
“I am following the manager’s system. He’s demanding a lot of pressing and when I have to press, I go 100 per cent and I don’t care who is there, who is not there,” Amad explained.
“I was happy to win the first penalty. I tried to shoot but I was maybe a little bit smart to say the defender was coming, and he touched my legs, [so it was a] penalty.
“The second one, we know Licha [Lisandro Martinez] is a good player to give you this ball. In the beginning, I didn’t believe in the ball because it was going too quick, but I touched the ball and I score.
“I was so happy to score against City and so happy to win this game. I want to enjoy this moment today and then let’s focus for the next game.”
