Ruben Amorim wants to sign Matheus Cunha at Manchester United and the Wolves star has explained how to get the best out of him.
Manchester United are reportedly considering a summer move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha — and it’s easy to see why.
The 25-year-old has stood out this season, scoring 14 goals and providing four assists in the Premier League, despite Wolves enduring a difficult campaign.
By comparison, United’s top league scorer, Bruno Fernandes, has just eight goals, while Rasmus Højlund has netted only three in 28 appearances.
While a new striker remains a priority, United also lack creativity and cutting edge behind the front line — an area where Cunha could make a real impact.
Cunha has told Amorim how to get the best of him
Should the Reds complete a deal for the Wolves star, Amorim will want to see him become an immediate success at Old Trafford.
In order to do that, the United boss needs to know exactly how to handle the Brazilian international behind the scenes to get the best out of him, and Cunha himself has already explained that the approach he needs.
“Sometimes all we want in life is affection,” Cunha told BBC during an interview in February. “People think we have everything, but we’re human beings, too.
“We need a bit of understanding – we have our difficulties. Wolves gave me that joy back.
“The fans [have given] me a lot. The status I have today, the player I am now and the happiness I’m feeling, it’s because of them. I’m really grateful to Wolves.”
Amorim’s man-management skills will be put to the test
Cunha’s personality is certainly controversial, that is clear, but the best managers have the man-management skills to deal with these different characters.
Sir Alex Ferguson was the very best at it. He knew his players inside-out and that is why mavericks like Eric Cantona shined so much under the Scotsman.
Amorim has made it clear that he will defend his players against media scrutiny as long as they are working hard for him. That has been showcased with the likes of Rasmus Højlund but Cunha is clearly a stronger personality than most of United’s current players.
That is exactly what this struggling side needs, but Amorim will also need to be aware of what Cunha needs to thrive.
