All players banned from Manchester United vs Athletic Club as UEFA confirm Europa League semi-final referee

UEFA have confirmed who will officiate the second leg of Manchester United’s Europa League final against Athletic Club on Thursday evening.

Manchester United are back at Old Trafford, ready to complete the job against Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-final second leg.

Rúben Amorim’s men come into the tie with a 3-0 lead after a dominant display in Bilbao, where Casemiro opened the scoring and Bruno Fernandes struck twice to put United within touching distance of the final.

Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, hold a 3-1 aggregate advantage over FK Bodø/Glimt but must brave the Arctic conditions in Norway to secure their spot in Bilbao.

With both sides languishing in 15th and 16th in the Premier League, the Europa League offers their only lifeline back into next season’s Champions League.

UEFA confirm Europa League officials

German official Daniel Siebert (pictured above) will be the referee on Thursday evening in Manchester. Siebert has officiated 16 German Bundesliga fixtures this season, six in the Champions League, and 17 in other competitions.

Siebert has officiated one United fixture in his career, coming in March 2023 when United put four past Real Betis in a 4-1 win thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, Fernandes, and Wout Weghorst.

So far this season, Siebert has issued 75 yellow cards in the Bundesliga and 191 across all competitions. He has issued five straight red cards this season and five via two yellow cards and has awarded 10 penalties, three of which came in the Champions League.

During the game, Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn will serve as Siebert’s assistant referees. Tobias Stieler will be the fourth official on Thursday evening, separating Amorim and Ernesto Valverde.

Christian Dingert has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Sören Storks will act as assistant VAR.

Europa League semi-final suspension confirmed

Athletic Club may be without several key players as they travel to Manchester on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the Thursday evening fixture.

After being red-carded in the first leg, UEFA has confirmed that centre-back Dani Vivian will miss the second leg. He is the only player officially barred from the tie.

Despite Alejandro Garnacho, Leny Yoro, and Mason Mount all receiving yellow cards in the first leg, if they receive a second in the tie on Thursday, they will not be suspended for the final.

The La Liga side also have some injury concerns. Oihan Sancet missed the first leg due to injury and has not been spotted in training this week. Nico Williams was also not present on Tuesday morning in Bilbao.

Meanwhile, Inaki Williams was seen training by himself rather than with the rest of the squad, which hints that the player’s fitness is not currently up to scratch, and that he may face a late fitness test on Thursday.
