Alejandro Garnacho started for Manchester United against Rangers on Thursday despite there being uncertainty over his future.

Manchester United are looking to offload several players during the January transfer window as they aim to improve their financial situation ahead of a pivotal summer.

Despite the team’s pressing need for reinforcements at left wingback, in midfield, and in attack, their transfer activity has been sluggish.

While Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to retain most of his squad, United are prepared to let several players leave before the window closes, with most departures expected to be on loan.

Alejandro Garnacho appears to be the most likely candidate for a permanent transfer this month, with Napoli and Chelsea being linked to the player.

Recent reports, however, suggest that Napoli has pulled out of the race, leaving Chelsea with a clear path to sign the 20-year-old if they decide to proceed.

Despite new rumours of the Premier League club planning a bid for the young winger, Garnacho started for United against Rangers this week.

United won the Europa League encounter 2-1 after a dramatic last-gasp winning goal from Bruno Fernandes.

Amorim’s side have conceded an equaliser on the 88th minute and it appeared that they were set to drop points once again.

But they managed to secure victory in the 92nd minute which puts them in a strong position for automatic qualification for the knockout stages.

Garnacho was one of United’s standout performers throughout the game. He completed the most dribbles in the clash and came close to scoring on a few occasions.

The Old Trafford faithful made their thoughts on the 20-year-old extremely clear, with the loudest chant of the night being, ‘Viva Garnacho’ mid-way through the second half.

Garnacho responds to United fans

Garnacho took to social media after the victory to send a response to those in the crowd at the Theatre of Dreams.

He wrote on Instagram: “Strong team performance. Thank you Old Trafford.”

It feels like the Argentine’s future still lays in the balance and anything could happen. When asked about the prospect of him leaving, Amorim could not rule it out.

“I’m focused on the games and he’s here. He is a player for Manchester United and was really important for us today. Let’s see the next days,” the United boss responded.
