Alan Shearer has provided a damning assessment of Manchester United ahead of the new Premier League campaign despite the signings of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Manchester United had a terrible campaign in the Premier League last time out, finishing in 15th place, and the Reds are trying to put that behind them ahead of the new season.
Ruben Amorim has welcomed three new signings to his squad so far but the main names coming in are Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Both signed from fellow Premier League clubs, the attacking duo scored a combined 35 goals in the division last term and should be able to help with United’s toothless attack.
Supporters are eager to see how the new players get on, while also hoping for more additions before the start of the campaign next month.
Shearer provides damning United assessment despite Cunha and Mbeumo signings
Alan Shearer has been speaking about United with Betfair and believes that both Mbeumo and Cunha are great signings for the Reds.
But even though the ex-Newcastle striker believes Amorim’s side will improve this coming season, he thinks that they still need at least three or four more top signings to break into the top six again.
That, of course, does not seem like it’s going to come for United, who are awaiting sales before they can make any more signings this summer.
“Last year was a disaster for Man United. It will be better than that this season I’ve no doubt, but how much better will depend on how much business they do between now and the end of the transfer window,” said Shearer.
“There’s no doubt they need a top-class centre-forward which would go well with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo
“So they’ve still got business to do and it depends on what quality they bring in. Even with just Cunha and Mbeumo, there’s no doubt they’ll improve on last season.
“As I said, they’re still three, maybe four top players away from challenging for the top six.”
Mbeumo and Cunha improve United more than Shearer thinks
It is a damning assessment from Shearer and some may argue that it is not entirely accurate, even though United’s position in the table last season was embarrassingly low.
But the additions of Mbeumo and Cunha directly help fix the biggest problem at Old Trafford, the lack of goalscoring in the team.
United deserved more points last season based on the chances they created but the forwards simply could not take advantage of certain situations and then they would be punished.
While those two signings do not turn United around completely, their presence will certainly move the Reds closer to the right side of the table.
When you add that United do not have European competition to deal with and can focus on the Premier League, there is a bigger chance for them to break into those positions.
While it is clear that United need more signings, the ones made so far can certainly lift them higher than Shearer is predicting.
