Alan Shearer has made a damning prediction about two Manchester United players in Ruben Amorim’s system that fans will agree with.

Manchester United drew 1-1 against Ipswich Town away from home in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge of the club.

Marcus Rashford gave the Reds an early lead before the hosts scored a well-deserved equaliser before the half-time whistle.

The second half proved difficult for Amorim’s side, who barley created chances and would be thankful to André Onana for keeping the game level.

United’s new head coach would have learnt a lot about some of his players and their roles in his new system after minimal time on the training pitch beforehand.

Amorim obviously changed the system, he went to his favoured three at the back,” Alan Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast.

“I was thinking ‘here we go’ when they scored early but they failed to kick on. It was very much like what we’ve seen all season.

“Ipswich more than deserved to get a point because [Andre] Onana pulled off a couple of incredible saves.

“He’s got a really big job on his hands and it’s going to take a lot of time. You can’t judge him after one game, he’s going to need the rest of the season to implement his style.”

United have a lot of games in the coming months to try and learn the way which Amorim wants them to play.

However, Shearer believes that it is ‘impossible’ for Casemiro and Christian Eriksen to play the type of football the the Portuguese head coach wants to implement.

The two midfielders were brought to the club under Erik ten Hag, and reportedly earn around £450,000-a-week between them.

“They need new players in there, there’s no doubt, they need some more legs and improving in the forward positions,” continued the ex-Premier League striker.

“For a start he’s got an ageing midfield. He played Casemiro and Eriksen in there today, it would be nigh on impossible for those two to do what Amorim wants in terms of the pressing and the high energy and the running and everything else.

“He’s going to need this season so sort things out. They spend a lot of money in the summer but they’re not going to get the rewards for that.

“He will need the rest of the season to get things done, it’s going to take time.”

It is likely that Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte will become the preferred midfield pairing under Amorim.

However, with the amount of games needed to be played this term, Casemiro and Eriksen will certainly get further chances in the team.

But if Shearer is proven correct, it is likely that Amorim will be wanting more signings in the midfield when the season is over.
