Alan Shearer has made a ‘big ask’ claim about Manchester United’s newest recruitment, Senne Lammens, after seeing the Emiliano Martinez deal fall through.
Having finished 15th in the Premier League last season, the 2025/26 campaign presented Ruben Amorim’s side with a chance to right their wrongs.
The Reds spent over £230million on their signings, which included a brand new attack featuring Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
United also acquired goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who has signed for the Reds from Royal Antwerp at only 23 years old, despite being interested in Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
Due to the Martinez deal collapsing, Lammens may be given a lot of responsibility at his new side despite his age and inexperience, which Alan Shearer has had his say on.
Shearer worries for Lammens
On their The Rest Is Football YouTube channel, Shearer spoke to his co-stars Gary Lineker and Micah Richards about the young Belgian shot-stopper and displayed concern about the signing.
When asked about Lammens, Shearer said, “Young, for the situation that he has to go into, if he’s going to go straight in there. That’s going to be a big ask for him.
“I mean, what happened to the Emi Martinez deal, I don’t know, because he didn’t play the other night did he, so obviously he didn’t get the move that he wanted.
“So that’s going to be a big ask for a young goalkeeper to go in there and start and perform.”
Is Lammens ready to start?
Now that United are out of the Carabao Cup, there is only one competition for the Reds outside of the Premier League, which gives Amorim far less chance to rotate his goalkeepers.
After what they have seen for the past few seasons, fans of United will be desperate to see some consistency between the sticks this season, and will hope this can come from Lammens.

Unfortunately for United’s new goalkeeper, he may get thrown into the thick of it due to the unreliability that has been on display by his competitors, although I’m sure Amorim will be careful not to scare the youngster.
When looking at United’s fixtures, their next two are an away game to rivals Manchester City and a tough home match against Chelsea, which may mean that Lammens’ debut is as far away as a home match against Sunderland on October 4.
