Alan Shearer has explained why he thinks the Manchester United board will be unhappy with one player who has been a ‘shining light’ for Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United’s Premier League campaign so far has lacked consistency. Sitting sixth after 16 matches, they have dropped too many preventable points along the way.
While Ruben Amorim will be encouraged by the form of players like Matthijs de Ligt and Bryan Mbeumo, not everyone has delivered. Several players are falling short of expectations and will need to raise their performances soon, or tough questions will follow.
Bruno Fernandes is the one player who remains consistent for the Reds. He is standing out and making a difference even in the deeper position he occupies under Amorim.
The club captain has scored five goals and registered seven assists in the Premier League so far this term, although he did come out in a recent interview and suggest that the United board preferred him to leave in the summer.
Shearer: United board will be unhappy with ‘shining light’
Fernandes attracted interest from Saudi Arabia in the summer and despite a mega-offer, he decided to stay at Old Trafford after conversations with his family and Amorim.
But the Portuguese star has claimed that those above Amorim would have preferred to see him leave so they could receive a hefty transfer fee.
Alan Shearer has had his say on the situation involving Fernandes, who he says has been a ‘shining light’ for United over the last five years.
The ex-Newcastle striker believes that this is the kind of thing that happens more in the modern game, and he thinks that the board will not be happy with Fernandes’ comments.
Where would Man United be without Bruno Fernandes? He’s been the shining light in a really sticky period for them,” Shearer told Betfair.
“He has stood out and carried them at times. So it was really interesting hearing him say that he felt as if perhaps the board weren’t as keen to keep him as the manager was.
“And I guess that’s what happens more and more nowadays when players have got more opportunities to talk because of social media and more opportunities to get their point across. I don’t expect the board, or the owners, enjoyed listening to him say that in the week.”
Replacing Fernandes is easier said than done
In a perfect world, United could have sold Fernandes for a huge amount and reinvested the money smartly and improved several areas of the team.
Yet, that is so much easier said than done and those in charge at Old Trafford should be thankful that the captain decided to stay.
Not only is he continuing to bail out the team with quality moments, but he is one of the few players who can deal with difficult moments.
Fernandes will continue to shine for the Reds, but the club do need to figure out how they are going to deal with losing him, and that seems like it could be a possibility next summer.
