Ajax have been told they should rehire Erik ten Hag after the Manchester United manager spent over £400 million on Old Trafford signings.

Erik ten Hag has been under fire for some of his Manchester United signings in the last 16 months after spending over £400 million on new players, with little progress to show for it beyond last season’s Carabao Cup trophy.

United qualified for the Champions League at the end of the last campaign, but now sit third in their group with only one win in three games; they also sit 8th in the Premier League table with five wins in their opening 10 fixtures, well behind their big six rivals.

And now, Dutch winger Andy van der Meijde, who plied his trade at Ajax, Inter Milan, and Everton, has proclaimed that Ten Hag should be allowed to rejoin struggling Ajax after he failed to buy a team at United – suggesting that Ten Hag should give up Old Trafford in favour of Ajax.

“Let him come back to Ajax and rebuild a team. That would be great,” he told FC Update.

“Things can move so quickly in football. You cannot buy a team together. You have to forge a team.”

Manchester United recently lost 3-0 to Manchester City in what can be described in no other way than an embarrassing performance, with Ten Hag’s Reds being steamrolled on their own turf by one of the best teams in Europe.

They will, however, have a chance to redeem themselves as they welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Wednesday evening in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with Ten Hag expected to make four changes.
