Andoni Iraola explains how Man Utd have improved under Michael Carrick, “They look more…”

Adoni Iraola has explained how Manchester United have improved under Michael Carrick ahead of United’s clash against Bournemouth on Friday night.

Michael Carrick has done an incredible job so far since becoming Manchester United head coach in January.

While Ruben Amorim opted for a system that brought him success in Portugal, but one that didn’t suit the current United squad, Carrick has opted for a more common-sense approach focused on getting players in their best positions.

Under Carrick’s leadership, United have won seven out of nine games and are in pole position to return to the Champions League next season.

United are currently conducting a thorough process to recruit a new head coach ahead of next season, but Carrick has made a very strong claim for himself so far and has certainly given the United hierarchy a lot to think about before they make a final decision.

Iraola explains how United have improved under Carrick

United travel to the Vitality Stadium on Friday night to take on 10th-place AFC Bournemouth.

In his pre-match press conference, Bournemouth manager Adoni Iraola explained how he felt United had improved under Carrick.

“It’s not just the results that this is evident and something very, very objective. It’s just that they are, for me, being more solid,” Iraola explained.

“Because they still have the same threat offensively, but they were the same with Rubén [Amorim]. They were scoring a lot of goals, having a lot of chances like they are having now, but probably defensively, no, they look more solid.

“They haven’t conceded a lot of goals. You see the chances they concede in some games [are] ridiculous.

“They don’t concede basically chances a lot of times, and probably the improvement in terms of points of feelings, no, it comes from this defensive solidity.”

Under Amorim, United conceded 30 goals in 20 games, an average of 1,5 per game. However, under Carrick, United have conceded nine goals in nine games, an average of one per game.

Holland deserves credit

At Middlesbrough, Carrick was regularly criticised for the way he set his team up off the ball. The appointment of Steve Holland as Carrick’s assistant was therefore a stroke of genius.

At Chelsea, Holland worked with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, two managers renowned for coaching their teams very well defensively.

There are still issues with United’s out-of-possession approach, particularly in the high-press, but the improvement under Carrick is evident.

It goes to show that football tactics go far beyond formations. Under Amorim, United played a back five and had sometimes six or even seven defensive-minded players on the pitch. Despite this, United were leaking goals.

Under Carrick in a back four, however, United are defensively far more stable than they ever were under Amorim’s management.
