Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been picking up plenty of praise in 2023 with his fantastic performances at Manchester United since the 2022 World Cup.

After he only played four minutes of competitive football under Erik ten Hag prior to the World Cup, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has made a fantastic claim to Manchester United‘s start right-back spot.

Performances against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final and Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals, locking down wingers Allan Saint-Maximin and Kaoru Mitoma in those respective performances, earned him shouts of being the best one-against-one defender on the planet right now.

However, former Manchester United and Premier League-winning defender Mikael Silvestre has explained that Wan-Bissaka cannot be classed as the best 1v1 defender in the world until he plays Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.

Vinicius has risen to the pinnacle of world football in recent seasons with his mindblowing performances alongside Karim Benzema for Real Madrid, winning them a Champions League title and other domestic trophies in the last four seasons.

Speaking to bettingexpert.com, Silvestre explained why fans should hold their horses on their Wan-Bissaka praise until he faces the best of the best.

“I don’t think we should say Wan Bissaka is the best in the world at 1v1 but over the years he’s had excellent battles against wingers,” he explained.

“I need to see him against Vinicius Junior.”

Silvestre also explained that the Englishman still has areas that require improvement – however, his original argument may be flawed, since he does not name a different defender who is better in a 1v1 situation than Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

“It’s good for Wan-Bissaka as he’s earned a starting spot and has a big part to play in the defensive side of things.”

“If his zonal defensive play and positioning was as good as his 1v1 ability he would be a complete defender. He still has some areas to improve.”

Despite his fantastic form, Wan-Bissaka was revealed to be one of seven defenders Manchester United are open to selling this window as they plan a major squad overhaul under Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United have announced that they will play Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly in the USA on 26 June, in Huston, where Aaron Wan-Bissaka may finally get his chance to play against the famed Brazilian winger.
