One Manchester United star impressed in the final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina and he could give Ruben Amorim a headache ahead of the new campaign.
Manchester United returned to England for their final outing ahead of the Arsenal clash in the Premier League opener next week.
New signing Benjamin Šeško was unveiled to the Old Trafford crowd before kick-off, but the visitors struck first as Simon Sohm found space in the box to score inside ten minutes.
United hit back when a Bruno Fernandes corner forced Robin Gosens to turn into his own net on 25 minutes. Bryan Mbeumo’s dangerous deliveries created chances for Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, but it remained 1-1 at the break.
The hosts took control in the second half, with late substitutions injecting fresh energy. Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount and Amad all went close, but the match went to penalties.
After Altay Bayındır saved the fourth Fiorentina penalty from Fabiano Parisi, Kobbie Mainoo slotted home the winner to secure the Snapdragon Cup.
United star gives Amorim headache with Fiorentina display
One of United’s standout performers in the game – and throughout pre-season – was Mount. He initially started as the no.9 before moving into the no.10 position after Mbeumo was subbed off.
The England international has struggled for much of his United career, mainly due to injury, but has managed to have a solid pre-season and he impressed once again at Old Trafford.
Mount had 37 touches and completed 29 passes during his 84 minute cameo. He aids the way United want to play in attack well; consistently keeps things ticking.
But it was once again his energy off the ball which stood out and Mount managed to create some opportunities for United.
“Unbelievable,” Amorim said of Mount’s performance. “The way he works. He knows all of the positions.”
Mount ready to compete
With the addition of Sesko in the frontline, you would imagine that Mount is going to come out of the team when the Reds host Arsenal next week.
But the English midfielder is certainly pushing on the door and he will be aiming to keep giving Amorim a headache throughout this season.

Without European football, the competition for places will be crucial for United and players have got to push each other.
Mount seems like he’s ready to provide that fight in the attacking line despite there being three major signings in those areas.
