One of Manchester United’s stars impressed in their favoured role during the club’s opening pre-season friendly against Leeds on the weekend.
Manchester United began their pre-season campaign with a goalless draw against Premier League rivals Leeds United in Stockholm, Sweden this weekend.
Ruben Amorim’s side faced early pressure but gradually settled into the game, eventually gaining control. Chido Obi had a couple of half-chances, while new signing Matheus Cunha caught the eye with his energy and attacking intent.
Despite some promising moments going forward, the first half ended without a breakthrough and Amorim then made 11 changes at the break, bringing on the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Leny Yoro, and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu.
United appeared more composed after the break, though Leeds also began to find their rhythm. The Red Devils pressed for a late winner and created several opportunities, but neither team managed to convert, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw.
Mainoo impresses in favoured role vs Leeds
There were certainly more standout performances for United in the second half of their opening pre-season clash, with Mainoo being one of them.
The young talent started in the deeper midfield role alongside Manuel Ugarte and managed to control the game in periods. He also shown his ability to play long passes to the flanks, something he has needed to bring more into his game.
During his 45 minute cameo, Mainoo completed all three of his attempted long passes, 18 of his 21 passes in general and also played three passes into the final third with his 30 touches.
He was also unfortunate to not score in the final moments of the game. He had two shots which both came late on, with one of them hitting the crossbar before a goalmouth scramble.
Mainoo’s talks with Amorim this summer
Mainoo reportedly held talks with Amorim earlier this summer and it was claimed that the 20-year-old wants to break into the team in that midfield pivot, rather than as a no.10.
He has played both positions under Amorim but looks more comfortable in the deeper role, but needs to improve his work out of possession.
We had a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park,” Amorim stated after the game. “You can feel that it’s hard to bring the ball, but we created chances.
“I think Matheus Cunha showed what we need. The player, when he receives the ball between the lines, can be really aggressive in the direction of the opponent.”
Mainoo’s work in possession against Leeds was impressive and if he can show improvements on the defensive front, he could find his way back into the team next season.
