14 Manchester United stars set to miss initial pre-season training as “wonderful” injured star’s return date explained

Fourteen of Rúben Amorim’s squad look set to miss the first few days of Manchester United’s pre-season training ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Rúben Amorim’s side returned to Carrington on Monday to begin pre-season training ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

After spending just under two weeks at the training ground, Manchester United will head out on a five-match pre-season tour. It begins with a trip to Sweden to face long-time rivals Leeds United at the Strawberry Arena.

The squad will then travel to the United States for fixtures against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton, before concluding their preparations at Old Trafford with a friendly against Fiorentina, featuring former United goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Premier League have confirmed that United will start the new season with a headline clash against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, 17 August, kicking off at 16:30 BST.

14 players to miss the first few days of training

With the first batch of United’s players set to return to pre-season training on Monday, including the likes of Amad and Ayden Heaven, 13 players are not due to return until after this week.

According to the Manchester World, those who took part in international fixtures after the end of the domestic season have been granted extra leave and are not expected to return to training until Thursday.

This means Altay Bayındır (Turkey), Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Rasmus Højlund (Denmark), Casemiro and new signing Matheus Cunha (Brazil), Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot (Portugal), and Manuel Ugarte (Uruguay), will not return until later this week.

Dalot and Fernandes have been given one week of compassionate leave after the passing of their compatriot, close friend, and Liverpool winger Diogo Jota.

Beyond these eight, another five have been informed they do not need to return to pre-season training for a few more weeks, as they are expected to leave the club.

Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Alejandro Garnacho have all been given time to sort out moves away from Old Trafford ahead of the new campaign.

Lisandro Martínez is also not expected to report for the first day of pre-season training with the squad. However, he may be involved in the gym as he continues his rehabilitation from an ACL injury suffered in February.

When is Martínez expected to return from injury?

Martínez, who was in “wonderful” form before his injury against Crystal Palace, had been a key player for Amorim and is expected to remain at United this summer despite tentative links away from Old Trafford.

Although it was expected that he would be sidelined until November, reports from last month indicated that the Argentina international is now on track to rejoin United’s main squad during pre-season training.

Additionally, there is optimism that he could return to action by September. Since the first weekend of that month falls during an international break, Martínez’s potential return is now being targeted for the weekend of 13 September — nearly two months earlier than initially anticipated.

Although there were fears that Amorim’s side could suffer from a lack of quality on the left side of defence in Martínez’s absence, the emergence of Heaven has been fantastic to watch.
