Manchester United release statement as January transfer window opens, decision confirmed on ‘crazy’ star

Manchester United have released a statement confirming their decision to recall a ‘x’ star after a failed loan move.

Manchester United ended 2025 with an underwhelming 1-1 draw against Wolves, which has left them sixth in the Premier League table.

Ruben Amorim’s side continue to be inconsistent and there is pressure for things to improve in the second half of the campaign.

With the January transfer window now open, there are rumours surrounding the possibility of signings to improve the squad.

United also have many players out on loan this term and have already made the decision to recall one of those youngsters after a difficult first-half of the season.

United release statement as January transfer window opens

Toby Collyer was sent on loan to West Brom in the Championship in the summer and they would have hoped that he could get consistent football in the Midlands.

The youngster has struggled for game-time at West Brom, partly due to injuries, and the decision has been made to recall him to Old Trafford.

United released the following statement: “Manchester United have recalled young midfielder Toby Collyer from his loan spell at Championship club West Bromwich Albion.

“The 21-year-old Academy graduate joined the Baggies in August to gain valuable experience playing in the Football League.

“Collyer made 12 appearances for Ryan Mason’s side and registered one assist. An injury in his last match, against Birmingham City on 26 November, has recently kept him sidelined.

“A highly rated talent with a tremendous work ethic, Toby returns to United to focus on his recovery and perhaps bolster Ruben Amorim’s options in midfield.

“Collyer made his senior Reds debut in August 2024 to proudly become our 251st Academy graduate. He went on to make 13 appearances last season.”

Will Collyer stay at United?

United will be considering all of their options with Collyer but it is also likely that he remains at Old Trafford and provides another option in midfield.

At the moment two of United’s four senior midfielders are injured and that has clearly impacted the team. Jack Fletcher has been used recently but it seems like he needs more time before he can play consistently at the level.

Collyer proved last term that he can compete at Premier League level. While his technical level is not too high, the youngster’s energy and game-knowledge is solid and he put in some ‘crazy’ cameos for Amorim’s side last term.

His future for the remainder of the season will likely depend on whether United sign another midfielder in the January transfer window.
