Player Ratings: Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid

Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford. The Spanish side won 0-1 on the night, and 1-2 on aggregate to see them into the next round.

Ralf Rangnick’s United side put in a disappointing performance, in one of the biggest games this season.

Player Ratings

David de Gea – 4

Made some good saves, particularly one in the first half off a deflected long-range shot. His distribution left a lot to be desired.

Diogo Dalot – 4

Left a lot of space behind him which Lodi exploited for Atletico’s goal. Dalot did not really create any substantial chances going forward.

Raphael Varane – 5.5

Denied his first United goal in the second half after a great save by Jan Oblak, who stopped a powerful header. Played some good progressive passes at times and was on the whole solid defensively.

Harry Maguire – 3.5

Looked uncomfortable on the ball tonight, and almost got dispossessed in United’s box in the second half. Maguire was also caught out of position on several occasions.

Alex Telles – 4

Like Dalot, he did not create many good opportunities, although it was his cross from which Varane almost scored. Was not at his best defensively tonight.

Scott McTominay – 4

Did not control the play as much as he would have liked tonight, playing as the deepest of United’s three midfielders. Subbed off in the second half after just returning from injury.

Fred – 6

Fred put in a good first-half display and was given a license to get further forward. Did not have as much of an impact in the second half, although he was still one of United’s best players. He was eventually substituted.

Bruno Fernandes – 3

After missing the previous game through illness, Fernandes did not have the impact many hoped he would on his return. Forced Oblak into a tough save late on in the first half, but otherwise did not affect the game much.

Jadon Sancho – 5

Did not get on the ball enough in the first half, and whilst he was more involved in the second, he couldn’t quite find that moment of magic we have seen recently. Fired a volley over the bar in the second half.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 4.5

Like Sancho, did not get on the ball enough during the first half. Ronaldo constantly had to come out wide to receive the ball, reducing the impact he could have in the box. A frustrating night for the striker.

Anthony Elanga – 4.5

Elanga had a chance from inside the six-yard box in the first half which was saved by Oblak’s head. The youngster didn’t get too many chances to run at Atletico but looked dangerous at times when he could.

Marcus Rashford – 3

Another tough night for Rashford, who did not have the impact he would have wanted. At times wasteful in possession and could not find space to properly run at their defence.

Paul Pogba – 4.5

Replaced Bruno Fernandes in the 67th minute and played a few good passes. Ultimately failed to be the difference tonight for United.

Nemanja Matic – 5

Brought on at the same time as Pogba for Scott McTominay. Made some driving runs forward and looked to kick-start attacks from his deeper role.

Edinson Cavani – 3

Did not have the impact Rangnick would have wanted of him. Failed to have a shot in the time he was on the pitch and was wasteful in his passing.

Juan Mata – N/A

Mata was not on the pitch long enough to constitute a rating.
