The Theatre of Dreams – It could send you to sleep

Manchester United just played out a boring, uneventful 0-0 against Watford and it was sadly 90 minutes of my life that I won’t get back.

United’s flat performance was mirrored by the fans who struggled to find their voice in the first-half and were out sung by the travelling ‘Yellow Army’ for the whole game.

The only time Old Trafford was near full volume was before the match started when all the fans, home and away, chanted the Neil Diamond hit ‘Sweet Caroline’.

Both sets of fans were also united in voicing their concerns about the on going conflict in Ukraine, with the Ukrainian flag dotted around the stadium.

Although the match ended in a draw, the Watford supporters won their battle against their counterparts in red, constantly shouting over the Stretford end attempts to make noise.

Watford’s faithful filled Old Trafford with humorous, negative chants towards United including, “is this a library”, “you’re just a stadium for tourists” and “we beat you 4-1, how sh** are you”.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on the end of the majority of abuse/banter from the away fans, as sarcastic ‘SIUUUUUUs’ rang out everytime the Portuguese did something wrong.

On the tram back to Piccadilly station I overheard some United fans say “you pay a lot of money, just to see players having a strop” and they’re spot on. I paid £180 total for the tickets and travel today and I’m leaving Manchester unimpressive and not entertained!

Old Trafford might be a completely different experience when United are winning, but if the result is likely to be a draw or a loss, you’ll probably best to stay in the comfort of your own home.
