Diogo Dalot has explained the reasons behind his solid form at Manchester United after a tough start to life at Old Trafford when he joined the club three and a half years ago.
The right-back has claimed the position in the starting line-up ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka since Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim manager.
With a differing skillset to his counterpart, Dalot has showed what qualities he brings to the table and how they can help the team.
Talking to club media, the Portuguese defender was asked about the secret to the form which has secured his place in the team for the first time since he signed for the Reds.
“I mean, since I started to play professional football I’ve always tried to keep my routine.” Dalot explained. “Not just mentally, but physically as well, to be able to be at my best level to perform.
“Especially the last season and this season I’ve been stepping up my level in terms of preparing for trainings and games. Whether it’s nutrition, whether it’s sleeping, whether it’s beats [music] before and after training.
“So I would say that this has been my biggest support outside the pitch for me to be able to perform on the pitch. I always try to keep my routines there so I can be completely ready to play.”
The defender also detailed a regular pre-match drink that he has with fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I mean every player has their superstitions,” he said. “To be honest, I don’t have many so now I always, and it’s a fun story, before the games, when we’re at the hotel, I always drink my coffee with Cristiano.
“It’s been a routine now. He actually dragged me into the coffee because I was not a big fan of coffee but now I’ve started doing that. Just to talk a little bit. Sometimes we have too much time in the hotel, so we get out of the room, just to talk a little bit and try to focus on the game.”
Dalot has made 20 appearances for United this season, with 14 of those being starts, and is set to play against Leeds United on the weekend.
