Wayne Rooney admits he would love to manage Manchester United one day

Wayne Rooney is a man who needs no introduction. But I’ll give him one anyway.

After becoming Manchester United‘s and England‘s all-time top goalscorer, he moved back to his home-town club Everton, before flying transatlantic to ship his trade at D.C. United in the USA. After playing 48 games in Washington, he flew back home to play for Derby County, where he undertook a player-manager role before becoming their permanent manager in January 2021.

Being a Manchester United legend, there has always been a feeling that he may one day end up at the helm of the club he scored 253 career goals for. However, with the club currently in a state of flux and no stable foundations to build from, no one would blame Rooney for not wanting the job just quite yet.

When asked about the situation at Old Trafford right now while being interviewed at the premiere of his new Amazon Prime Video documentary “ROONEY” which is out on Friday, February 11th, he said:

They are obviously going through a difficult period. In my opinion, what they needs is, whether it’s Rangnick or whether it’s a new manager at the end of the season, they need someone to go in there and have time to build a squad.

I think the next three years certainly it is going to be difficult for them to win the Premier League, so they need to give someone that time to build a squad and then really challange for the big prizes, which a club like Manchester United needs to be doing.

He isn’t wrong. From a fans’ perspective, it feels as if the club need a right kick up the… well you know the next word… to get themselves back into gear and once again challange for the biggest prizes that the football world has to offer.

When Wayne Rooney was asked on whether he would like to be the man to take United back to the top one day, he replied, “Of course I would. At the minute, obviously, my focus is on Derby County and us staying up, but Manchester United, Everton; the two clubs are very close to me, and hopefully one day in the future if i can manage one of them two clubs, it would be a great achievement for me.

Wayne Rooney leading Manchester United to Premier League and Champions League glory would be a dream come true for United fans aroud the world.

But for now, that’s all it is; a dream.
