Mason Greenwood’s alleged actions are not a game and should they be proved, he should be held accountable

I’m in shock. It’s absolutely sickening to see and hear the contents this morning. The alleged actions of Mason Greenwood, who has had the love of the Manchester United fanbase since before his debut on the 10th of March 2019, have ripped all of that away.

For those who are not aware, a woman has accused Mason Greenwood of domestic abuse through images on her social media account, with videos that followed which suggested that the footballer was attempting to force her to have sexual intercourse with him. The images and video have since been deleted from the social media platform.

We have received a statement from the club and there will be an investigation to follow, but the writing feels like it could already on the wall. If the images provided on Instagram did not twist your stomach, where the victim had a busted mouth and bruises across her body, the subsequent audio messages from her account certainly would have.

“Move your f*cking legs up… I don’t give a f*ck what you want you little sh*t” is just one of the vile things that can be heard from the audio when the woman was refusing to have sex.

“I’m gonna f*ck you, you t*at. I don’t care, you will f*cking have sex with me, do you hear me?” is another. It’s difficult to listen to, simply because this is the lowest of the low.

This isn’t some game, either. I’ve seen some tweets online where people seem to forget that this is real life. That’s a real girl, who felt that the world needed to know about these incidents, which suggests this is not the first vile incident that has occurred. The victim has finally stepped up to speak about her experience and people should not treat it as a separate life, this is real life, and he needs to be punished.

If the alleged abuse is found to be fact, not only should he be banished from stepping foot on the Old Trafford pitch ever again, but he should be answering to the law. An investigation must take place immediately, and actions taken afterwards. When footballers commit a crime, they should be tried and tested against the law just like everybody else — Mason Greenwood is no exception.

However, most importantly, we should take a step backwards and completely take the man out of the picture. The victim needs and deserves support throughout this period. The main story should be that these alleged actions have ruined this young women’s life, not the career of a football player.

Personally, I feel horrified at this news, but also hugely disappointed that this is who Manchester United’s ‘starboy’ apparently really is. Some of us have been following the development of this man’s football journey for the last three or four years, blind to the fact of what kind of person he was becoming outside of the pitch. It’s truly shocking.

There will be trolls online that will somehow use this situation in a distasteful way, but the majority will turn on the once loved superstar due to his alleged revolting actions, not because it will fuel some sort of agenda.

An investigation will be held, and we will probably have more information on the situation in due course, but at this point in time, whether or not he ever plays again for Manchester United looks to be the last of Mason Greenwood’s problems.

This is not a game. If these allegations are proved to be true, he should be punished for his actions. Young men need to realise that this behaviour was, is, and will always be, unacceptable.
