Former Manchester United full-back Paul Paker has named Declan Rice as the best possible signing for the Red Devils, claiming he’s exactly what the side need at the moment.
Parker had the pleasure to share the field with midfield generals such as Roy Keane and Bryan Robson. It’s easy for him to assess where the problem is for United now.
It was just weeks ago when the 57-year-old exclaimed that the midfield options at Old Trafford were ‘relegation standard’. He’s now suggested the perfect signing to fix that problem.
“He’s 100% what Manchester United need,” Parker told Betfred, speaking on West Ham’s Declan Rice. “You saw that at the weekend, exactly why Manchester United need him. He’s far better than any midfield player that Manchester United have got on their books at this moment in time.”
The English midfielder was the standout for the visitors in their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford, completing 56 of his 58 attempted passes on the day.
Despite being just 23 years of age, Rice has been consistently performing in the Premier League for the last three years. This is indisputably valuable, and a reason why Parker believes Rice would be a better purchase for United then Jack Grealish was for Manchester City.
“The problem is that, as I’ve said many times, he’s not going to cost you £100million because he’s a far better player for any club, than Jack Grealish is for Manchester City.
“Man City paid over the top for Jack Grealish because you’re not getting that consistent player. Declan Rice plays the same week in, week out.”
Although, a single signing will not get United into a position to challenge for the top trophies and with Paul Pogba likely to leave the club after his contract expires in the summer, United will need further midfield signings, even if Rice would be a big step forward.
“Manchester United should sign him, but if I was Declan Rice I would say ‘who else are you going to sign to complement me? Who else is going to complement me in that midfield? I can’t be coming to United and doing that amount of work.’ And that’s what he’d have to do at this moment in time if he wants to go there.” Parker admitted.
“But it would be Manchester United’s best signing for a long, long time if he went there.”
Speaking after the loss in Manchester last weekend, Rice showed plaudits to the Theatre of Dreams, after the late-winner from Marcus Rashford sent the 70,000 into raptures.
“Every time I come to Old Trafford, I’ve always said it’s one of my favourite places to play.” Rice admitted on Sky Sports. “It’s an amazing stadium.
Declan Rice has two and a half years left on his current contract at the London stadium. United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has been reported to be an admirer of the Hammer’s midfielder, as well as Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.
