After originally signing him on loan originally in January 2021 for six months, Nottingham Forest decided to re-sign James Garner the following summer on a one-year loan deal from Manchester United.
Yesterday, they faced Derby County, managed by United legend Wayne Rooney.
In a tight affair, Nottingham Forest beat the Rams 2-1 after goals from Lewis Grabban (48′) and Brennan Johnson (82′) sealed the victory. Derby pulled one back late on through a penalty scored by Welshman Tom Lawrence (88′), however, it was too late for the men in black and white to salvage anything from the game.
Despite the goals, it was Garner who grabbed the headlines.
“A midfield masterclass from the Manchester United loanee. He was everywhere, tracking back when required and showing his full passing range. Absolutely superb.“
Garner was given a 9/10 rating for his performance – the statistics back it up as well.
Against Derby, James Garner won 5/8 ground duels, as well as 3/6 aerial duels He also made 2 key passes, had 49 touches, attempted 3 crosses and 3 long balls.
To further this, he made 4 tackles, 3 interceptions and 1 clearance, and was only dribbled past once in the entire match.
It remains to be seen what future James Garner has at Manchester United. With Nemanja Matic out of contract in the summer and yet to sign a new deal, there is definitely space for Garner to try and impress whichever manager takes the helm in the summer.
There are rumours that United are looking to sign a defensive midfielder this year, however, James Garner could yet have something to say about that.
